LAS CRUCES - Following the lead of their neighbors to the north, the Mesilla board of trustees will discuss and consider approval Monday of the projects and initiatives that town officials consider as funding priorities for the upcoming legislative session.
Trustees meet at 6 p.m. at Mesilla Town Hall, 2231 Avenida de Mesilla, to define those priorities. Altogether, town officials have put together a wish list of eight projects that would amount to $9.917 million if the Legislature were to approve all of them. Public Works Director Debbie Lujan will make a presentation to trustees.
The top priority is $6.49 million needed for improvements to 14 roads within the town. Officials will also attempt to seek $896,966 for improvements to about 2,500 linear feet of Calle de Parian, an important thoroughfare that provides access to and from the Mesilla Plaza into the town's historical residential district. Of that proposed allocation, $208,830 would be earmarked for storm drainage improvements, and $688,136 would go toward road and utility improvements.
"Calle de Parian is in major need of repair," Town Clerk Nicholas Eckert said.
Other priorities include: $848,352 for proposed storm drainage, utilities and road improvements for Calle de Santiago;
Las Cruces officials will meet with southern New Mexico legislators at 8:30 a.m. Monday, at City Hall, 700 N. Main St., for a briefing on the city's top legislative priorities, including construction of a crisis triage center for people needing mental evaluations and replacement of the 911 emergency call center.
Related to crisis triage center and emergency 911 call center, Mesilla Fire Chief Kevin Hoban will also present a resolution seeking trustees approval for those projects. The crisis triage center and 911 call center would benefit Do-a Ana County since all municipalities, as well as county government, utilize the call center for emergency communications.
The proposed crisis triage center could also impact southern New Mexico since similar facilities are all located in northern New Mexico, and the costs of transporting a person to a facility for evaluation could range in cost from $600 to $4,000.
