State 99 today, looks toward centennial

LAS CRUCES - Today is New Mexico's 99th birthday, and plans now begin in earnest to prepare for the state's centennial celebration.

Preparations have started for a special SalsaFest to be conducted Aug. 28 in downtown Las Cruces. A salsa competition, music, dancing, and entertainment are planned, but the Centennial Hot Air Balloon and other special elements are also being tentatively scheduled.

The nonprofit organization is still accepting suggestions for a good name for the event that incorporates "SalsaFest" and "Centennial."

Anyone who wants to compete, volunteer, or offer sponsorships should call the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership office, at (575) 525-1955.
