DEMING - A high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon resulted in the arrest of Billy J. Porter for aggravated fleeing from law enforcement and tampering with evidence.
Porter, 27, previously of Deming but now with a Las Cruces address, was pursued by Deming police, Luna County sheriff's deputies and Motor Transportation Department officers before being arrested at a relative's home in the 400 block of West Pear Street.
The pursuit began at 2:05 p.m., Police Chief Michael Carillo said, when Porter, on a Suzuki motorcycle, sped past Officer Robert Chavez in the Pine Street and Gold Avenue area, where there is a 35 mph limit.
Chavez attempted a traffic stop, Carillo, said, but Porter accelerated, going west on West Pine Street then south on South 12th Street to Highway 418, where Porter hit approximately 120 miles an hour.
Officers spotted Porter's Suzuki at a residence in the 2200 block of South Tin Street and began to search the area. Officers determined the motorcycle was registered to Porter at the West Pear Street address and checked that house.
"A search of the residence located the driver hiding in the attic," Carillo said. "He was taken into custody by Officer Chavez."
