LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces Academy, 212 S. Main Street, a private school for gifted and academically advanced students, is having an open house Jan. 11.

Morning visitors may speak with teachers and observe English, Chinese, phonics, social studies, and math classes from 8 to 10 a.m., while evening visitors may tour the academy and speak with teachers from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Current students are enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade, and the academy is now accepting applications for kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2011-2012 school year.

The academy provides a challenging, yet supportive environment, encouraging academic excellence over a wide range of subjects, said Lou Ellen Kay, the director. Daily classes include math, science, reading, writing, social studies, P.E., Chinese, Spanish, and the arts. The classes are small and the instructors teach only in their area of expertise.
