LAS CRUCES - Doña Ana County commissioners will make a recommendation Tuesday about who should fill a vacant Senate seat that covers a small portion of the county.

The District 40 seat was vacated Jan. 1 when Dianna Duran, R-Tularosa, was sworn in as secretary of state.

The district is mostly located in Otero County, but does cover Do-a Ana County's Precinct 6, which includes White Sands Missile Range and a portion of the East Mesa.

Residents of district who are interested in being considered for the seat should attend Tuesday's meeting, county officials said.

The Doña Ana County commissioners have the option of choosing their own nominee or endorsing the recommendation of either Duran (Melynn Pattillo) or the Otero County Board of Commissioners (William Burt).

Residents seeking consideration must bring seven copies of their resume and letter of interest. They also must be prepared to give a three-minute summary of their qualifications and reasons for seeking consideration, according to a news release.

Precinct 6 encompasses parts of the following off-base residential areas: A Street, Aguirre Springs Road, Baylor Canyon Road, Baylor Peak Road, Dripping Springs Road, First Street, Los Vaqueros Drive, Round Up Road, Space Murals Lane, Tierra Alta Road and U.S. Hwy. 70.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the commission chambers of the Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd., Las Cruces.
