LAS CRUCES - An East Mesa elementary was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon while Las Cruces police searched the area for suspects in a burglary that had just been reported a couple miles away.
The lockdown at Highland Elementary School started at 2:24 p.m. and was lifted about 10 minutes later, causing slight congestion in parent pickup and buses leaving, said Las Cruces Public Schools security director Todd Gregory.
There was no indication the suspect had been close to the school, at 4201 Emerald Street, just north of U.S. 70, and the lockdown was a preventative measure, Gregory said.
It's unknown if the suspects in Thursday's burglary were eventually apprehended.
