LAS CRUCES - Gregory Z. Smith has announced his candidacy for City Council, District 2, a seat being vacated by Dolores Connor, who is running for mayor.
The Nov. 8 election is still more than nine months away, and candidates won't file formal declarations of candidacy until Sept. 28.
"I am proud to call Las Cruces home," Smith, 67, said, "I want to help this community achieve its potential and be a place in which we can all take pride."
Smith said he is running for City Council because he believes in giving back to the community where he lives. Smith has been involved in many volunteer organizations. He serves as president of the Board of Directors of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership, vice president of Mesilla Valley Preservation Inc., and is chairman of the Mesilla Valley Centennial Planning Committee.
During Smith's tenure as president of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership, the downtown has seen new restaurants open, work to reopen the north end of Main Street, La Placita nearly completed, and efforts to start business incubation begun with the Camu-ez Building Project.
He is also a past president of the Paleozoic Trackways Foundation.
Smith said he wants to help Las Cruces remain a safe and healthy community, and will encourage small business development. He pledges commitment, dedication and a strong work ethic to the people of District 2.
