In image 1, seventh-graders Albert Barajas, 12, left, and Helen Cai, 12, do some last-minute set-up work on their windmill Friday at New Mexico State University before it is tested on how well it can lift weight. The Sierra Middle School students were two of a four-person team competing against about 300 other students in the MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) Southwest Regional Design Competition. The contest consists of three categories: hands-on; prepared wind energy and a water-as-energy-and-resource written test.
In image 2, Sierra Middle School students Conrad Vasquez, 12, Luis Montes, 12, Dominique Yoder, 11, and Tommy Gbogbo, 11, collaborate on a written test with questions on wind energy. It was one part of the prepared wind energy test in the MESA competition. The top 15 middle and high school teams will advance to the state competition in Albuquerque in early April, MESA Regional Coordinator Monica Blea said.
In image 3, MESA volunteer judge Rocky Navaratte measures how high and fast a 300-gram weight is lifted by a model windmill.
