LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Bishop Ricardo Ramirez has been hospitalized with pneumonia, the diocese confirmed.

The bishop's doctors want Ramirez, 74, to spend several days in the hospital, and then rest next week when he is released, diocese employee Gloria Irigoyen said.

The diocese said it would not release the name of the hospital so the bishop could recover without an overwhelming number of visitors.

Ramirez became the first bishop of the Diocese of Las Cruces on Oct. 18, 1982.
