LAS CRUCES - A white-collar criminal fleeing a 10-year federal prison sentence was captured in Las Cruces mid-day Thursday, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed.
Joseph P. Donahue, 56, of Clarks Summit, Penn., failed to surrender to authorities in early January after being convicted of bank fraud last spring. Marshals found him - and allegedly a car full of evidence, including a computer - around noon at the Plaza Suites, a hotel just off the New Mexico State University campus.
Donahue was found guilty of 16 counts of defrauding banks, credit card companies and clients and was sentenced in December to 121 months incarceration. He was ordered to report to Fort Dix, N.J., to begin serving his 121-month sentence on Jan. 4, but never appeared, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
It's unknown why he chose Las Cruces for his escape.
