LAS CRUCES - A total of three rear-end car crashes backed up highway traffic Wednesday evening, New Mexico State Police confirmed Thursday.

Occupants in all three crashes were injured, but alcohol and seat belt use are not thought to have contributed to the incidents, said Lt. Eric Garcia.

The result was bumper-to-bumper traffic, reported by one motorist at about 7 p.m. on Interstate 25 from University Avenue to just north of Lohman Avenue.

The first crash occurred at 6:04 p.m. on I-25 southbound near mile post 2, when one vehicle rear-ended another, causing minor injuries. All parties declined treatment by emergency medical services.

The second crash happened just north of the first crash and was also a rear-end collision in southbound lanes, thought to be caused by the traffic congestion. Both the driver and the passenger of the rear-ended vehicle were taken by ambulance for treatment for minor injuries.

Finally, the third crash was just north of the first two crashes, and is also believed to be a domino effect from the snarled traffic. All parties involved in the third crash declined to be transported by ambulance for their minor injuries.
