LAS CRUCES - Legislative confirmation could come as soon as this week for Las Crucen Alvin Dominguez, who was nominated by Gov. Susana Martinez to become the cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

"I've been told by the governor's office that confirmation could happen by later this week," said Dominguez, who was traveling to Santa Fe. "I understand that I'm number 18 on the list, so it could happen sooner rather than later."

Dominguez has worked for NMDOT for 15 years, including seven as the department's District One engineer, the top administrative position in each of NMDOT's six districts.

"New Mexico's growing population requires that we strike the right balance between our transportation needs and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars," Martinez said. "As an experienced engineer and public servant, Alvin has the background required to help me create forward-thinking transportation policy with prudence and accountability."

Dominguez graduated from New Mexico State University in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering technology. For 10 years, Dominguez was a field engineer for the city of Roswell before joining NMDOT.
