LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces firefighters were on the receiving end of a vandalism spree at the city's Fire Station 1, when several vehicle windows and one door into the station were damaged.

Dan Trujillo, spokesman for the Las Cruces police and fire departments, said the damage occured shortly after 3 a.m. Firefighters heard the commotion and called police, who responded and arrested a man who was damaging the property. The man was arrested, but could not be immediately identified because records offices were closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

At least one of the vehicles was a city-owned SUV which sustained "heavy" damage with all windows shattered, Trujillo said. The others may have been private vehicles owned by firefighters.

"The Main" is also home to Fire Headquarters. Station 1 is responsible for the distribution of station supplies and the department's uniform inventory.

"We still don't know the monetary amount of damages," Trujillo said. "And we certainly don't know why (the suspect) did it."
