LAS CRUCES - There was a happy ending Wednesday for a hard-luck kitten.

The 11-week-old feline was stabbed and burned before being turned over to the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley on Christmas Eve.

The yellow-and-white kitten was adopted, along with several others, and is now purring away in the company of his new family. The kitten was taken in by the animal shelter with a gaping stab wound to its abdomen and burns to the wound. Instead of euthanizing the wounded cat, shelter staff nursed it back to health and it was taken to a new "forever home" this week.

The cat was one of several adopted out in recent days. Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, director of the ASCMV, said this time of year many mature cats are adopted because there are not many kittens being born and given away for free. As soon as the local cat population begins to have litters, that will slow down, making this a perfect time to adopt a shelter cat.

"This is the best chance of the year for cats in Do-a Ana County to find a permanent home right now," she said.

And for the furry survivor?

"The important thing is that he got a home," she said. "That's what matters."
