In what was widely considered a surprise hire Thursday, the Oñate Knights tapped Caleb Hull to be their next head football coach.

The 32-year-old Hull comes from Las Cruces High School, where he was special teams coordinator and an assistant on the offensive and defensive lines from 2008-10.

He beat out 13 candidates for the position, some with head coaching experience on their résumé.

Hull's first head coaching gig will be as the replacement for Kelly McKee, who ran the Knights' program for 14 years before his resignation following a 2-8 season.

"It's a good hire for Oñate," LCHS head coach Jim Miller said. "It is surprising, just from an experience standpoint. ...He's an emotional coach, he has a high motor. He's young, he's dedicated. No one's going to put in more hours out there to try and get it done."
