LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico Supreme Court has appointed Las Cruces Municipal Court Presiding Judge Melissa Miller-Byrnes to the New Mexico Municipal Judge Advisory Committee.

The seven-member committee, now in its fifth year, reviews minor complaints or concerns about Municipal Court judges in the state filed with the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts and seeks equitable solutions.

As presiding judge of the Municipal Court since 1999, Miller-Byrnes is responsible for supervising administrative matters related to the court, which includes court personnel, budget, docket management, as well as establishing internal and external policies and procedures.

In 2006, Miller-Byrnes became a fellow of the Institute for Court Management through the National Center for State Courts. She currently serves as vice president of the New Mexico Municipal Judges Association and is also a member of professional organizations including the National Association for Court Management, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, the American Judges Association, the New Mexico Municipal Judges Association, the New Mexico Municipal League, the Women's State Bar Association and the Tonali Legal Alliance for Women.

On Jan. 3, Miller-Byrnes instituted longer court hours to better serve the public. The court is now open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The court is open during the noon hour and has added
