LAS CRUCES - A teenager has died after apparently shooting himself accidentally, according to the Doña Ana Sheriff's Office.
Investigators have sent the body of Jonathan Montoya to the state Office of the Medical Investigator for autopsy.
Montoya, who turned 19 just three weeks ago, reportedly shot himself in the chest at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home at 11911 Soldier's Court, in Radium Springs, N.M.
Two men were still trying to revive him when deputies and ambulance personnel arrived on scene, but Montoya was soon pronounced dead. The exact cause of death, as well as a determination about whether the shooting truly was accidental, will be learned at autopsy.
Montoya was on probation - standard conditions of which ban any possession of weapons - for an October drunken driving conviction at the time of his death, according to court records.
