LAS CRUCES - The O-ate Band Royal Knight Regiment is hold a mattress fundraiser sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 12 in the O-ate band room, 5700 Mesa Grande Drive. Proceeds go directly to the band. All sizes and assortments are available, including pillowtop, orthopedic and memory foam. All mattresses are new with factory warranties. Free layaway and delivery available. Deadline for Favorite Teacher is March 18
LAS CRUCES - The deadline for the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest is March 18. All elementary, middle and high school students can participate by writing an essay, poem or thank-you letter (500 words or less) sharing
Each essay should be submitted with an entry form and a parent or legal guardian must sign the form acknowledging that they have read the contest rules.
The winning teacher will be recognized at an event at their local Barnes & Noble store where they will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement and a set of ten Sterling Children's Classics books for their library.
The six regional winners will each receive a NOOK eBook Reader and a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card.
The winner of the Barnes and Noble Teacher of the Year award will receive $5,000 and be recognized at a special event at a Barnes & Noble store. The winning teacher's school will receive $5,000 as well, and an author visit by Laurie Halse Anderson, a New York Times bestselling author who writes for kids of all ages. The winner will also receive five copies of the winning essay published in hardcover by Tikatok.com, the site where students create and publish their own books, and a $250 Tikatok Gift Card that will allow the teacher to publish select stories written by students in their class.

Silver district wins Lujan award
SILVER CITY - The Silver Consolidated School District was one of 17 school districts around the state to receive the 2010 Ben Lujan Maintenance Achievement Award.
The Silver District received the District Gold Award and Silver's Maintenance Supervisor Barry K. Ward received the Individual Recipient Award.
Ward was one of 16 individuals to receive the award statewide.
The award is given out by speaker of the House Ben Lujan and the New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority. It is named in honor of Ben Lujan for his many years of support of public education.
The Public School Facilities Authority partners with districts to train facility and maintenance professionals, and to implement systems and processes that establish better public school facilities throughout New Mexico.
