During the teeth of the recession in 2009, when most areas in the country lost gross domestic product, the Las Cruces area actually saw a gain of about $120 million.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, in 2009, the GDP in the Las Cruces Metropolitan Statistical Area - all of Do-a Ana County - improved from about $5.25 billion to $5.37 billion. That makes the Las Cruces area just one of 74 MSAs out of 366 to show an increase.

Albuquerque and El Paso also were among the 20 percent minority that saw an increase in GDP in 2009. While the Duke City rose just slightly less than $100 million, El Paso saw a bigger jump of more than $700 million between 2008 and 2009. The top GDP in 2009 was New York City and the second was the Los Angeles area.
