OHS students are rallying together during school as well as through the weekend with a coin drive, raffle tickets, pancake breakfast and two car washes. Money raised will go the victims hospital bills.

LAS CRUCES - The Oñate High School varsity football player who was struck twice in the head with a baseball bat Sunday remained on life support into Thursday evening at University Medical Center in El Paso, authorities said.

Gerardo "Jerry" Zamarripa, an 18-year-old senior, remains on a respirator at University Medical Center, according to authorities. Witnesses to the attack continue to be questioned, but no arrests have been made, according to the Doña Ana Sheriff's Office.

Zamarripa and several friends were leaving an East Mesa house party early Sunday when a group of party-crashers confronted them, witnesses said. One allegedly stabbed Anthony Sena, 18, another OHS senior, in the side, and then hit Zamarripa in the ribs and twice and in the head with a bat, a witness reported. Sena is expected to survive his injury.

To help defray the families' medical expenses, an account has also been set up at Citizen's Bank to help pay for medical expenses, under account number 0123516806, in Zamarripa's name. A coin drive at the school, has already raised $690, and raffle tickets will go on sale today, with proceeds to also benefit the medical fund.

Other benefits include a pancake breakfast hosted by Oñate alumni football players from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the school's commons; a car wash from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at AutoZone, 2940 N. Main Street; and another car wash from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., coordinated by OHS football players, at Olive Garden, 100 N. Telshor Boulevard.

Saturday evening, donation jars will be set up at the ticket counters at the varsity basketball game at the high school, 5700 Mesa Grande Drive. A candlelight vigil will follow the game.
