EL PASO - A Chaparral man was arrested for allegedly trying to steal four cases of beer in front of an off-duty El Paso police officer wearing flip flops, according to the El Paso Police Department.

The off-duty officer, a 2 1/2-year veteran of EPPD who is assigned to the Mission Valley Regional Command, was fueling his vehicle in the 2100 block of North Mesa at 2:49 p.m. Friday when he saw Kyle Marquez, 22, allegedly running out of the Good Times store with two 12-packs and two 30-packs of beer - dropping some - and getting into a car with the rest as the clerk called 911.

The officer identified himself and, despite the footwear, was able to chase Marquez behind the business and take him into custody.

Marquez's two previous convictions for theft elevated Friday's theft charge to a felony. Marquez, of the 700 block of Sunny Sands, was booked into the El Paso County Jail with a $4,500 bond.
