LAS CRUCES - A total of five applicants will be considered to fill a District 2 vacancy on the Las Cruces Board of Education. They are: Leonel Brise o, Susan Colquitt, Victor Contreras, Barbara Hall and Tony Schaefer.
The five applicants will attend a public forum in mid-March so that the current school board members can ask them questions about their interests, experiences and views on public education. A date for the forum will be announced soon.
Brise o, a former LCPS school board member from 2001-2009, is the director of faith formation at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. He has a bachelor's degree in social work from New Mexico State University and a master's degree in science in religion and religious education from Fordham University.
Colquitt is an eighth-grade English teacher with LCPS and is planning to retire at the end of this school year after 32 years in the classroom. She has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in reading from NMSU.
Contreras, Jr. is the manager of field operations for Loaves and Fishes, Senior Food Commodities. He has a bachelor's degree in anthropology from NMSU, a master's degree in agriculture economics and economics, and a diploma in sociology and political science from El Colegio de México in Mexico City.
Hall is a retired educator from LCPS, where she worked for 26 years. She is currently a student teachers supervisor for the NMSU College
Schaefer, a former Do a Ana County Commissioner and former state Public Regulation Commissioner, is executive in charge of operations for Schaefer Group Enterprises, Inc. He has a bachelor's degree from NMSU.
The board, which includes President Connie Phillips, Vice President Chuck Davis and members Bonnie Votaw and Maria Flores, will select the new board member by majority vote during an open meeting.
