LAS CRUCES - A fire atop The Mattress Store building on El Paseo Road was quickly extinguished Sunday afternoon by firefighters. No injuries were reported.
A blower unit motor located on the roof of The Mattress Store, 1265 El Paseo Road, ignited the blaze and flames atop the building were quickly noticed by a store employee, who called 911, said Steve Alexander, a spokesman for the Las Cruces Fire Department.
When crews arrived at the scene, employees and shoppers of The Mattress Store and neighboring buildings were evacuated and the fire was quickly extinguished, he said.
The dollar amount in damages was unknown Sunday night.
"Luckily, the employee noticed the fire before it had time to spread," Alexander said. "The building does have an attic space and it very easily could have spread to that area."
No smoke damage was reported inside the building and a hole was cut into the roof and ceiling tiles were removed to ensure that the blaze hadn't spread further, he said.
