LAS CRUCES - Interested residents get their chance today to see two new fire engines that will soon be put into service by the Las Cruces Fire Department.

The fire engines will be on public display from noon until 1 p.m. today at City Hall, 700 N. Main St. Fire Department personnel will be available to showcase features and answer questions.

When put into service, the fire engines will be at two of busiest fire stations. One will be used at Station One, on Picacho Avenue, and the other will be at State 2, on Foster Road.

They will replace fire engines that have been in service for 10 years, and each that has logged more than 120,000 miles.

The new engines, built by Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton, Wis., were purchased by the city of Las Cruces for $438,944 each through a New Mexico Finance Authority loan. The loan will be paid through the city's Vehicle Acquisition Fund in nine annual payments.

Each new fire engine has seating for five firefighters, a 1,500 gallon-per-minute pump, foam system, and a 500 gallon water tank. The new apparatus also include safety features such as front and side-impact airbags, rear and side-mounted cameras, seat belt monitoring, and a vehicle data recorder.
