•Miriam Chaiken and W. Thomas Conelly, professors of anthropology at NMSU, will discuss both the negative and positive aspects of life in Africa for Academy For Learning in Retirement lectures "Africa Today" at 10:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday in the Good Samaritan Society, Las Cruces Village Auditorium, 3011 Buena Vida Circle. Topics will include African history, rural agricultural life, and the contributions of development programs in Africa. There is a nominal $5 fee for each lecture and no advance registration is required.

•Doña Ana County Assessor Andy Segovia will have an educational community meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the commission chambers, Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd. In addition to conveying his departmental goals for 2011, he will provide information about the assessment and protest processes. Anyone who owns residential or commercial property in Doña Ana County is encouraged to attend, as are livestock owners. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation. (575) 647-7400.
•The Doña Ana County Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Roadrunner room, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. The program will be presented by Quentin Ford, former dean of the college of engineering at NMSU. •A presentation titled "Making the Law of Attraction Work in your Life" will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Metaphysical Life Enrichment Center, 2600 El Paseo Road. The presenter is Cheryl Vallejos, certified business coach and consultant and spiritual adviser to The Law of Attraction Training Center.
