LAS CRUCES - Livestock producers who incur eligible livestock death losses due to adverse weather on or after Jan. 1 and before Oct. 1 this year should begin gathering related loss documentation, according to the Farm Service Agency in New Mexico.
"The snowy, cold weather conditions experienced in New Mexico in late January and early February can be a qualifying adverse event," said Salomon Ramirez, executive director for USDA's Farm Service Agency. "If you've experienced death losses due to the recent weather conditions, contact your local FSA County Office for more information."
Heat spells, flooding, wildfires and other disasters declared by the Secretary of Agriculture during the year are eligible for the Livestock Indemnity Program, according to a news release.
Applications can be filed at a local FSA County Office even before providing the documentation to verify death losses.
More information about LIP is available at FSA county offices or by visiting the national FSA website: www.fsa.usda.gov.
