In image 1, Ulysses Reid, right, teaches a group of fifth-graders Thursday at Fairacres Elementary about how the early Spanish explorers cooked as they traveled El Camino Real using copper pots. The students are from left, Bryan Marquez, 10, Charlee Lopez, 10, Maddie Crouse, 11, and Caleb Campbell, 11. Reid was traveling with the Van of Enchantment, a statewide museum outreach vehicle operated by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. The van puts on more than 10,000 miles per year as it visits "every corner, every edge" of the state, said Jamie Brytowski, statewide outreach coordinator.

In image 2, Fifth-grader Zeke Renteria, 10, learns how to mix chocolate using a wooden stirrer known as a molinero. It is one of the interactive exhibits that travels on the Van of Enchantment. On the table is a buffalo pelt.
