LAS CRUCES - A 32-year-old man was jailed after allegedly drunkenly crashing his SUV into a convenience store across the street from New Mexico State University.

Ignacio Salcido allegedly drove his 2001 Chevy Blazer into the Howdy's at University and Locust at 7:43 p.m., said Las Cruces Police Department officer Wallace Downs, but by the time officers arrived at the scene, Salcido had fled on foot.

Nobody at the store was injured, but the store suffered damage to its windows and a wall.

After finding Salcido's cell phone and calling his mother to discover Salcido was the only one who should have been driving the car, officers began a search of the area and found Salcido in less than half an hour, Downs said. Salcido was arrested and charged with drunken driving, no insurance, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest and having several open containers of Bud Light in the car, Downs said.

Salcido was booked into the Do-a Ana County Detention Center.
