LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces firefighters extinguished a fire Wednesday evening that caused heavy damage to a residence and killed a pet cat.

The Las Cruces Fire Department was called to the mobile home near Porter Drive and Lemo Road around 5:30 p.m., where firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire.

The fire was under control in approximately 15 minutes.

The three adults and child who lived there were not home at the time of the fire, which caused significant damage to the entire structure. A damage estimate and a cause of the fire have not been determined.

Two dogs who lived at the residence were recovered by animal control officers.
