LAS CRUCES - A Las Cruces man was sentenced Wednesday to 78 months in prison on federal child pornography charges.
William Ege, 52, was arrested on Nov. 6, 2009, and pleaded guilty on June 9, 2010. He has been in custody since his arrest. Ege admitted in a plea agreement that he possessed more than 600 sexually explicit images of children as young as 4 years old. Ege downloaded the images from the Internet.
Upon completion of his sentence, Ege will be on supervised release for life. He also will be required to register as a sex offender.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen H. Wong, and brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation was led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security, with assistance from the Las Cruces Police Department.
