LAS CRUCES - Two accidental house fires were put out early Monday in central and west Las Cruces, according to the Las Cruces Fire Department.

Crews discovered smoke coming from a concealed space next to a residence's fireplace just before 1:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Chestnut Place. The occupants, alerted by their smoke alarm, had evacuated the home and the fire was immediately brought under control.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature and the cost of the damage had not been determined by Monday.

The second fire was reported at 5 a.m. in the 1200 block of Ethel, in west Las Cruces. Flames and heavy smoke were discovered coming from the home's eaves and chimney, and after ventilating the roof, firefighters contained and put out the fire.

The occupants had noticed smoke inside the home and had evacuated it before calling 911. One was treated for respiratory difficulty on scene. No other injuries were reported in either incident.
