LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police are warning residents of a scam that attempts to gain access to credit card information by calling customers on their cell phone.

Several cell phone users have reported receiving the automated call from an unknown phone number, usually only a four digit number such as "1402."

Once the call is answered, the automated voice says the customer's credit card has been deactivated. The automated voice then asks the customer to use their cell phone keypad to enter their 16-digit credit card number in order to reactivate the card.

Residents are warned that the call is a scam and an attempt to gain access to the resident's credit card. The source, or origin, of the calls is unknown at this time.

Police suggest residents who receive such a call simply end the call, or hang up, without speaking or entering any numbers.

Residents also are reminded to refrain from divulging any financial or personal information over the phone - or via the Internet - unless you are absolutely positive of whom you're communicating with.
