Presiding Judge Janice Giron, bottom, and Precinct Judge Insima Gonzales staff the voting polls Tuesday at the Do a Ana County Government Center for the Las Cruces Public School Board election. The turnout was very light - 27 votes were cast in the first six hours - for the uncontested races of Bonnie Votaw, who was running for re-election in District 4, and Connie Phillips, who was running for re-election in District 5. There were no other questions or bond issues in this election.

LAS CRUCES - With both candidates running unopposed in the Las Cruces school board election, fewer than 100 votes were cast Tuesday's election.

Bonnie Votaw received 39 votes in the District 4 election, and Connie Phillips tallied 60 votes in District 5. Both incumbents will serve another four-year term.

Prior to the election, Votaw and Phillips both discussed the challenges ahead for the district, including declining revenue, a need to reduce the dropout rate and keeping up with growth in the district.

"We started things four years ago. And you see how it's slowly progressing and you want to continue that," Phillips said.

School board elections were also held Tuesday in the Gadsden and Hatch districts.

All three races in Gadsden were also unopposed. Gloria Y, Irigoyen received 17 votes in District 1, Maria E. Saenz 14 votes in District 3 and Daniel Castillo 31 votes in District 4.

The only contested races were in the Hatch School District. In District 2, Paul A. Dulin received 36 votes to defeat Richard Lee Moyers (25) and Samuel Joe Hays (26). In District 3, David B. Franzoy won with 38 votes, to 16 for Arthur J. Tarin.

Running unopposed were Bobby R. Codero, with 22 votes in District 4, and Greg A. Mitchell, with 15 votes in District 5.

All results are unofficial until canvassing Friday.
