Baby, it's cold outside - and it's going to get colder.

Winter is taking a late swipe at the region, with Dona Ana, Otero and El Paso counties all under a winter weather advisory from 6 p.m. today through midnight Wednesday at least

The National Weather Service in Santa Teresa said an arctic front is pushing through, bringing heavy snow and frozen rain to the state. Temperatures this afternoon could drop as much as 30 degrees in one hour as the front blows through.

Northern and high-altitude areas will be hardest hit, but Las Crucens can expect extremely bitter wind gusting up to 50 mph this afternoon. Freezing rain is possible, as well as up to four inches of snow at higher altitudes

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights could see lows in the single digits and little warming through the day. NWS officials say we could set record low temperatures.

So bundle up; take steps to protect your pets, plants and pipes; and check on loved ones and neighbors to ensure their safety. If you are traveling in the state, check road conditions at www.nmroads.com, or the road advisory hotline, 511.
