LAS CRUCES - Alvin Dominguez's appointment as New Mexico Transportation Secretary was approved Friday by the state Senate.

"I am honored and humbled to be confirmed as department secretary," Dominguez said. "It's an enormous challenge to maintain a transportation system that is dependable and safe, while never losing sight of our fiscal responsibility. The (New Mexico) Department of Transportation and its extraordinary, dedicated employees are ready to meet that challenge."

Dominguez is a native New Mexican. He attended Roswell High School and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology from New Mexico State University in 1983. He spent 10 years as a field engineer for the city of Roswell before joining NMDOT in 1995.

Dominguez has served as NMDOT's South Region design regional manager, based in Las Cruces, the past three years. Before that, he was District One engineer, the top administrative position, for NMDOT in southern New Mexico, from 2000 to 2007.

"The people of New Mexico will have a qualified engineer and a dedicated public servant leading the Department of Transportation," said Gov. Susana Martinez. "Alvin is a native New Mexican who has accumulated valuable experience at the Department, earning the respect of his colleagues along the way. I'm certain he will be a great steward of our transportation needs while overseeing the responsible use of taxpayer money."

"I have known Mr. Dominguez for many years and he is truly a man of character," said Garcia, who carried Dominguez's nomination. "He served as district engineer in my area and whenever I have called on him, Alvin has been extremely responsive and effective."

Dominguez's family - including his wife and three sons, and his father - was with him Friday, in Santa Fe, as the Senate confirmed his nomination. Dominguez and his family intend to maintain a home in Las Cruces.

The Department of Transportation oversees the maintenance of more than 30,000 lane miles and nearly 4,000 bridges across the state. NMDOT also has oversight of all public transportation, aviation, highway operations, traffic safety and infrastructure planning and design. The department's annual budget is about $822 million, which is almost equally divided between state and federal funds.
