LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces firefighters extinguished a fire Monday morning in a central Las Cruces apartment.

The fire department was called to a report of smoke coming from a building, near Main Street and West Lucero Avenue around 10 a.m. The first arriving fire unit encountered smoke and heat coming from a single apartment.

Crews forced entry and immediately located the fire burning in a living room. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within minutes and contained the blaze to a single apartment. No other units in the complex were damaged.

The fire caused extensive smoke and heat damage. The total dollar loss and cause of the fire have not been determined. The resident of the apartment was not home at the time of the fire.
