LAS CRUCES - On Tuesday, during a Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education retreat, Superintendent Stan Rounds presented a preliminary redistricting plan for high schools students in anticipation of the new high school's opening in 2012.
The plan aims to ensure that there's an equal balance of students from socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicity and English Language Learners at all four high schools in Las Cruces. Under the proposed plan, there would be about a 5 percent fluctuation between students for each area.
The Las Cruces School Board reviewed 10-year enrollment trends, which showed that the new high school would alleviate the overcrowding that currently takes place at Las Cruces, Mayfield, and O ate high schools, under the proposed plan.
The new high school can hold 2,064 students and can accommodate overflow from each of those schools allowing both Las Cruces and Mayfield high schools to avoid over crowding through 2020. O ate High School would be over capacity by 2016, something the Las Cruces School Board said they would address at the time through either expansion or renovation.
The Board will vote on the redistricting proposal in December, 2011 after several public hearings and executive review.
