LAS CRUCES - A man facing a 10-year sentence for illegally re-entering the country is being sought by police on charges he attacked his estranged wife in front of their children.

Miguel Gonzalez, 26, whose last known address is 5825 Dune Drive, in Las Cruces, could still be in the Do-a Ana County area, according to authorities.

Gonzalez appeared to be drunk when he is alleged to have showed up at his wife's East Mesa home the night of Dec. 18, according to documents filed in court this week by Do-a Ana sheriff's investigator Bo Nevarez.

The woman told police she and her young son and daughter were asleep when Gonzalez woke them and she let him in, according to court documents. Once inside, Gonzalez allegedly took the three into a bedroom, confiscated the woman's car keys and phone, and told her he wouldn't leave until he was given money.

Gonzalez then allegedly slammed the woman's head into the wall, grabbed her hair, pulling a clump from her head, punched the wall and smacked the woman in the face, leaving a visible scratch and swelling to her eyebrow.

During the altercation, Gonzalez allegedly refused to let the woman take their children to another room, away from the abuse.

Gonzalez, whose criminal history includes charges of sexual assault, resisting arrest and cocaine possession, is in the country illegally and has been deported before, according to the sheriff's office.

His new charges include false imprisonment, battery against a household member and

interference with communications. Gonzalez is being sought on a nationwide warrant with a $10,000 cash-only bond issued by Las Cruces Magistrate Court Judge Richard Silva. He is described as being 6 feet tall, weighing 175 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.
