LAS CRUCES -- After feasting Thursday night at a dinner sponsored by the Trojans booster club, the Mayfield High football team will leave this morning for Albuquerque to get ready for Saturday's Class 5A state championship game against top-seeded Manzano.
Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Wilson Stadium, 12200 Lomas Blvd. NE in Albuquerque. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, and are available online at nmaa.ticketleap.com or at the stadium.
The Trojans were seeded sixth going into the playoffs, after four losses in the regular season, and beat two higher-seeded teams to reach the championship. After opening with a 27-3 win over Rio Rancho, they knocked off third-seeded Cleveland 21-13 in Rio Rancho in the quarterfinals, then upset second-seeded La Cueva 21-17 last Friday at the Field of Dreams.
Mayfield has a 42-19 all-time record in the playoffs, dating back to 1971, and has reached the championship game eight times in the past 10 years, winning the state title three straight years, from 2005 to 2007.
