LAS CRUCES -- A Las Cruces teen will be prosecuted in 7th Judicial District Court in Socorro after ecstasy and marijuana were allegedly found in a car he and a Chaparral man were driving in.
Kevin James Wilson, 19, of Las Cruces was charged Nov. 22 with felony ecstasy possession and trafficking, conspiracy and misdemeanor marijuana possession, according to court records.
His passenger, 22-year-old David A. Pedraza, of the 200 block of Palma Blanca in Chaparral, entered a plea deal Wednesday, pleading guilty to marijuana possession as part of an agreement that dismissed the other, felony-level charges. He was ordered to serve five days in jail, of a suspended 90-day sentence. He will also serve 90 days probation concurrently with a 1 1/2 year sentence imposed after an August conviction for felony marijuana trafficking, according to court records.
Wilson was pulled over near Bernardo, N.M., 175 miles north of Las Cruces, for going 85 in a 75 mph zone on Interstate 25, the El Defensor Chieftan originally reported this week. A search of the vehicle reportedly revealed not only a small amount of marijuana, but also a baggie containing 141 brown ecstasy pills -- variously stamped with dragonflies and pumas -- in the center console.
Pedraza's mother told the Sun-News on Thursday that her son did not know the ecstasy was in the vehicle.
If convicted, Wilson face up to 14 years in prison and more than $20,000 in fines, the Chieftan reported.
