LAS CRUCES - The widow of a victim in April's triple homicide is no longer considered a person of interest in the case, according to the Doña Ana Sheriff's Office.
Barbara Weith, the widow of Peter Weith, who was murdered April 14 with his business partners in Mesilla Hills, was never considered a suspect, but might have been able to give them information about a tip they received earlier in December, officials said.
The sheriff's office told the Sun-News on Dec. 16 she was "another person of interest we'd like to interview" because "with any murder investigation, the people close to the deceased are always eliminated and she has not been eliminated."
Since that report, the sheriff's office says Weith and her attorney "have been cooperative with investigators."
"Initially there was some difficulty in contacting Ms. Weith, but that was due to distance, the threats she had received and the fact that Ms. Weith is understandably afraid for her safety," according to a news release Friday. "Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department investigators have been in (phone) contact with Ms. Weith and her attorney for months, and are still trying to schedule an in-person meeting with her, but that does not imply that she is a suspect or person of interest."
The sheriff's office says the more than 8-month-old investigation is still pursuing multiple leads and that "progress is being made."
