The number of people in the United States grew nearly 10 percent in the past decade, but that still marks the slowest rate of population growth since the Great Depression, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.
The nation now has 308.7 million people, up from 281.4 million in 2000. In the 1930s, the population grew by just 7.3 percent.
In New Mexico, the population increased to about 2.1 million in 2010, up from 1.8 million in 2000, leaving the Land of Enchantment the 36th-most populated state in the union, the same as a decade ago. California remained the most-populated state, and one of the fastest growing, as it jumped from 33.9 million in 2000 to 37.2 million in 2010. Wyoming retained its status as least-populated state, although it did grow from about 494,000 to 564,000.
