Chief of state police Segotta to retire

LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State Police Chief Faron W. Segotta has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31.

Segotta, who has been with state police for 28 years, has accepted a position with SAFER New Mexico Now, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing death and injury on New Mexico highways, according to a Friday announcement from state police.

"I look forward to continue my work in public service with SAFER New Mexico," Segotta said in a prepared statement Friday. "Additionally, I want to thank the men and women of the state police who have made New Mexico's highways and communities the safest in our State's history; but most importantly I want to thank my family and friends who have provided support and guidance through the years."

After being commissioned as a state policeman in 1982, Segotta served in various assignments and promotions throughout the state and was appointed the state's 19th state police chief on March 8, 2006.

Segotta also serves as the deputy cabinet secretary of the Department of Public Safety.

"Chief Segotta has done a tremendous job for our agency," said Department of Public Safety Secretary John Denko. "When tasked with searching for the 19th chief of the New Mexico State Police, I knew Faron was the right choice."
