LAS CRUCES -- About $3,5000 in damage was caused after a light bulb caught the contents of a storage unit on fire Wednesday night, the Las Cruces Fire Department said Thursday.

Passers-by reported the fire, which started in a storage unit on the 2300 block of East Lohman Avenue sometime before 9 p.m.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the eaves of the roof and the roll-up doors of the unit, cut open the doors and quickly extinguished the fire. Damages were contained to a mattress and several boxes inside the unit, but firefighters did have to cut open the doors of several adjoining units, which also suffered smoke damage.

Fire investigator Adrian Arias determined the fire was accidental in nature, caused after the unit's renter had visited earlier in the day and left a light bulb on, causing combustibles just inches from the bulb to heat up and catch on fire.

No injuries were reported.
