LAS CRUCES - Local small business owner Greg Sowards has announced on his website that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Jeff Bingaman.
In his online announcement Sowards wrote, "The most pressing fight of our time involves the question: what will be the national atmosphere that our children's children will live under? Will they have the liberty to experience and learn from those endearing lessons that freedom affords? Or, will they be deprived of that opportunity through governmental intervention and the squandering of their resources by short sighted politicians?
"It is those questions that compel me to step forward and offer myself, my values and the conservative principles on which I will base any action in Washington," he said.
Sowards, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for Do-a Ana County commission in 2008, said the decision came after many discussions with family and friends.
Bingaman, a Silver City native, won election to the Senate in 1982, and in 2006, was re-elected to serve a fifth term.
