LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces school board members heard a report Tuesday on the possible sale of Court Youth Center to the Mesilla Valley Youth Foundation.
Court Youth Center, 402 W. Court Ave., is an nonprofit organization that offers after-school, weekend and summer programs.
The center's founders hope to establish a Community Creative Learning Center on the first and second floor of the building, as well as house Crossroads, a program for students serving long-term school suspensions, and house the J. Paul Taylor Academy Charter School.
Irene Oliver-Lewis, executive director and artistic director of Court Youth Center, said that Alma d'Arte Charter School, which is also located on the property, would continue to operate from there.
Since 1995 about $5 million has been invested in the historic building from federal, state and city sources to complete the 49,000-square-foot facility, according to the center's website.
The board took no action on the proposal.
In addition, the board heard a presentation on the seven parent centers operating around the district. The centers promote parental involvement and offer English as a Second Language classes, parenting classes, parent and child time together (PACT), and early childhood education.
The next regular meeting of the Las Cruces school board is Jan. 18.
