LAS CRUCES - A man who allegedly struck his wife several times as she tried to shield their 5-month-old daughter surrendered to authorities Wednesday morning.

After three days communicating with him, Do-a Ana County Sheriff's Sgt. John Ordonez was able to persuade 28-year-old Clinton Simpson to surrender to Ordonez and Sgt. Jerod Houston at the sheriff's office without incident.

Simpson, of the 6000 block of Prairie Lane in Las Cruces, was booked into the Do-a Ana County Detention Center on charges of child abuse and battery against a household member and a separate warrant for aggravated battery against a household member, issued in 2008.

The 27-year-old victim, along with the couple's daughter, were taken to Memorial Medical Center Sunday night after Simpson repeatedly kicked and punched the woman while she was holding their daughter, according to court documents filed in the case by investigator Bo Nevarez. When the victim was pushed to the floor, the infant struck her head against a laundry basket, leaving a noticeable mark.
