HATCH - Federal officials on Tuesday marked the opening of a new apartment complex in Hatch that's meant to replace housing that was destroyed in a 2006 flood.
A ribbon cutting was held for the new Falcon Ridge Apartment Complex on the outskirts of Hatch.
"The people of Hatch certainly won't forget the August, 2006 flood disaster which ravaged the town," said USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner, who was on hand for the ceremony. "The construction of these apartments shows that something good can come out of that tragic event."
The 2006 flood heavily damaged Los Caballos Apartments, displacing all occupants who resided in the 72 units. A number were eventually relocated to a Federal Emergency Management Agency mobile home park in Rincon. A few homes are still in place at that park.
Now that the apartment complex has opened, many of the families that were originally displaced by the flood four years ago are now moving into their new apartment units, according to the USDA.
Continued Brunner: "This project is a true example how the federal government, the state government and private enterprise can come together to finance and rebuild an apartment complex to provide a safe and comfortable home to those who will live here."
