LAS CRUCES - A Las Cruces man arrested for driving while intoxicated also faces child abuse charges for having his 1-year-old daughter along for the ride.

Christopher D. Serafin, 28, is charged with one count each of negligent child abuse and DWI. He also was cited for driving without insurance and for inappropriate lane usage.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, a motorist called 911 to report the driver of a Nissan Sentra westbound on U.S. 70 was apparently weaving in and out of traffic and failing to stop at red lights on north Main Street.

A Las Cruces Police Department officer spotted the vehicle traveling south on Solano Drive and initiated a traffic stop near Kansas Street. The officer reportedly found Serafin smelling of alcohol, with bloodshot and watery eyes and noticeably slurred speech. Serafin's 1-year-old daughter was secured in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle.

Serafin had allegedly consumed at least two malt beverages prior to getting behind the wheel of his vehicle. He was transported to the Do-a Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $2,000. His daughter was turned over to the custody of her mother.
