LAS CRUCES - The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department is asking the public to help find a man who allegedly struck his wife several times as she tried to shield their 5-month-old daughter.

A warrant has been issued for Clinton Simpson, 28, of the 6000 block of Prairie Lane in Las Cruces. He is wanted for third degree child abuse and misdemeanor battery against a household member and a separate warrant for aggravated battery against a household member, issued in 2008.

The 27-year-old victim, along with the couple's daughter, were taken to Memorial Medical Center Sunday night after Simpson repeatedly kicked and punched the victim while she was holding their daughter.

According to court documents filed in the case by investigator Bo Nevarez, the couple were arguing and the the wife was repeatedly kicked and punched while trying to shield the infant. When the victim was pushed to the floor, the infant struck her head against a laundry basket, leaving a noticeable mark.

According to the victim, Simpson, who stands 6-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 260 pounds, does own a handgun and may be armed. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes.

A separate warrant, which is still outstanding, was issued for Simpson's arrest on Oct. 21, 2008, charging him with one misdemeanor count of aggravated battery against a household member, against the same victim. Bond was set at $1,000.
